Lift Truck Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries used to run electric forklifts should be charged regularly and properly maintained. Safety procedures must be followed when someone connects the battery to the charger. It is vital to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is important for anyone working with a lift truck battery. Full protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect skin and clothing from other residue or leaked acid is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging area should be an emergency eyewash station. The path to the post should not be obstructed and an employee who is injured should be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging area in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger must be at the same amperage. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
While in the vicinity of a charging area and battery, open fire are not allowed. Do not permit objects like lighters or matches to be used while somebody is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging are also has to be well ventilated. The recharging method could release gas. These fumes are both poisonous and explosive.
